What is shame? Here are some definitions/thoughts/reflections on shame in various languages and styles:

Die fünf Grundformen der Scham
- Intimitätsscham hat die Funktion, die körperlichen und seelischen Grenzen zu schützen. Werden diese verletzt, bleibt die betreffende Person mit Schamgefühlen zurück, z.B. Opfer von Missbrauch.
- Anpassungsscham sorgt für Zugehörigkeit: für die Orientierung an den Normen und Erwartungen der Mitmenschen. Wer diesen nicht gerecht wird (z.B. arme, hilfsbedürftige oder ungebildete Menschen), bleibt mit der Scham zurück, ‚anders' zu sein, ausgeschlossen.
- Gewissensscham ist die Hüterin der moralischen Integrität. Wenn wir unsere eigenen moralischen Werte verletzen, schämen wir uns vor uns selbst.
- Gruppen-Scham (oder "Fremdschämen") meint die Scham, die man für eine andere Person oder Gruppe empfindet, z.B. für das "schwarze Schaf" in der Familie oder die Nation, der man angehört.
- Empathische Scham bezeichnet die ‚ansteckende' Wirkung von Scham: z.B. wenn wir die Gefühle eines Menschen, der erniedrigt wird oder sich selbst erniedrigt, empathisch mitfühlen.

- Scham entsteht aufgrund mangelnder Kontrolle des Körpers oder des Geistes oder des Körpers durch den Geist in der realen oder virtuellen Präsenz Anderer und bezieht sich auf Verhaltensnormen, die während der Kindheit oder in der Jugend erworben wurden. Es dient zugleich als Schutz der persönlichen Emotionalität und Intimität in Abgrenzung zu Anderen und betrifft deshalb immer den ganzen Menschen.

- Shame is a panhuman emotion and cross-culturally related to blushing (Casimir & Schnegg 2002). People experiencing shame lower their faces, avert their gaze and slump their shoulders
- A bodily reaction to the transgression of cultural norms and elicited by behavior inappropriate in terms of in-group norms
- Failure in control of body and/or mind in the (virtual or real) presence of others as trained in infancy and childhood => affecting a person’s identity
- What causes the shame reaction is culturally highly variable as norms and values are variable…

SSIHN
The SSIH-Network aims to bring together scholars from different disciplines on the topic of the history of shame and shaming. Building on a nucleus of colleagues that attended a conference on "Shame between punishment and penance" which took place in October 2010 at Paris, the group wants to establish an international network to organise workshops, conferences and publications around the topic of the social usage and discourse on shame and shaming in European and Non-European History. Therefore the group will apply for funding at the ESF and other national supporting institutions.
